What is a Hole Saw?

Hole saws are actually drill-bit like tools that allow you to cut precise holes in materials like metal or wood. There are many different types of hole saws, and these tools are used by a very wide variety of craftsmen....but the most common types of hole saws are perhaps the ones that are used with drills to cut holes in wood or metal.

These types of hole saws operate in a fairly straightforward way. Basically, you have a drill bit that has two nuts on it. One of the nuts is secured in place, and the other is removable. You take this nut off, and slide the hole saw onto the drill bit.

There are often hole saws of many different sizes in a set. For example, if you need to run some 2 inch piping, you  could use a 3 inch hole saw to make a big enough hole to send it through.

Once you secure the hole saw itself to the drill bit, you line up the drill bit with the center of where you want your hole to be, and drill. Once the pilot hole is drilled, the hole saw will come into contact with the surface, and begin cutting.

This type of hole saw is very popular with plumbers, electricians, and carpenters, but bigger and more complex hole saws are used in still plants and woodworking shops for various different tasks.

One of the most important things to remember about a hole saw is that it can be dangerous if it binds up, so you need to be sure that whatever you are using to drill it with is secured well. Having a large drill bind up on your can cause very severe injuries.
